Start with the Basics

Hi Girls!

My thought for today is not some drastic, revolutionary idea. It's something we've all heard before, many times—Bible reading. My thought comes from Matthew 4:4—

“But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

I want to focus on two words—every word. Most churches that I have been to have some kind of Bible reading program that, if you follow, leads you to read your Bible through in a year. If you have never done this, let me encourage you to start here. But if you have, it is time to move on. My question is “How can we know every word of God if we only read it through once a year?”.

The fact is, we can't. Now, I'm not saying we need to memorize the whole Bible; for one thing, the Bible never commands us to memorize it. Sure, we are commanded to meditate on it and to hide it in our hearts, but, let's face it, to most of us, memorization is remembering the verse long enough to quote it to someone and then promptly forgetting it in order to memorize another passage of Scripture. We need to know the Bible.

We need to be able to go to our Bibles and go straight to Scripture that will help us. If someone asks us to pray for something, we should be able to go to our Bibles and find out whether or not what they want is the will of God. If we are struggling with sin, we should have verses that we can go to immediately. Lonely? Find passages about peace!

In my experience, pastors get up and preach that we should study the Word of God, but they have never taught us how to study. My answer—READ!!!! Read your Bibles, not just once a year, but over and over and over again until you know it backwards and forwards, so that no matter what happens in life, you always, ALWAYS have an answer for whatever happens. Only after we know our Bibles can we live by EVERY word of God.

The MOST Important Thing

2 Corinthians 13:5—“Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.”

Girls, today I want to talk to you about the most important decision you will ever make: the decision of salvation. Probably most of you have grown up in church and have heard sermons about this dozens of times before, but the Bible says in 2 Corinthians 13:5 to examine ourselves, to prove whether or not we are saved. Paul was writing this to the Corinthian church, which was a group of supposedly saved members, and yet he still commanded them to make sure of their salvation. This is a command that everyone needs to follow. The worst thing to happen would be to die and find yourself in Hell because you thought you were saved. Even if you know beyond 100% that you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, please read this blog.

As a kid, I was always afraid of death. I never had any close encounters, or anything, but I was always afraid of dying and going to Hell. I grew up in church, so every time I heard preaching or teaching on salvation, I would pray the prayer and relax, because I knew Jesus would answer me. When I was five, I heard a story in Wednesday night AWANAS about a little boy getting lost in the woods and finally, the rest of the group finding him. Of course, the application was we are all spiritually lost, and need Jesus to save us. I raised my hand, and the teacher took me to another room to talk to me. She is a sweet, sweet woman, and I love her dearly, but she was shocked that I was not saved. I was the “good kid”; the one that always one the quiet seat prize, always obeyed my teachers, never got into trouble, so she was shocked that I, of all people, was not saved. Sometimes we are surprised by those who come forward for salvation, but she did not simply lead me through the plan of salvation and then later tell me how shocked she was; she, while she was with me in the room, carried on about how she would never have guessed that I was not saved. This made quite an impression on me. My teacher told me to talk to my mom when I got home, so I did. My mom explained that it was not the prayer that saved me, but my faith in Jesus Christ. That night, I prayed the sinner's prayer as I never had before and received Jesus as my Savior.

Years later, I again struggled with my salvation. This was mostly because as a teenager, when I heard messages on salvation, I heard about the heavy guilt loads that the preachers had when they got saved, and I had never had a heavy guilt load. Did this mean I had never been convicted of my sin? If I had never been convicted of sin, could I still be saved? I struggled constantly with this. I did not want to talk to anyone, because of the woman I talked to when I was five. I was still the “good kid.” People still thought of me as the model child. Was it pride that kept me from talking to anyone? Partly, but it was also the fear that the person would be so shocked she would not explain to me the answers I needed. Finally, I was lying in bed on September 1, 2006, and I could not take it anymore. From my room, I could see that the lights were still on, so I knew my dad was still awake and I went out to talk to him. He explained that little kids often don't have guilt loads when they accept Jesus; but we are supposed to make doubly sure we are saved (Philippians 2:12), and so I prayed again, just to have peace that I truly had accepted Christ.

Philippians 2:12~~~~"Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling."

Please, girls, don't let pride or fear get in your way of salvation. If you are not sure, please, find someone to talk to today. Call your pastor's wife, or a good friend. If she does not have the right reaction, it is on her shoulders, but if you don't talk to someone, it is your soul that will end up in Hell. All you have to do is trust Jesus to save you. We are all sinners; we have all transgressed God's holiness. There is no way we can reconcile ourselves to God, so Jesus Christ came and died for us, paid our price, and it is His blood that covers our sin once for all time. Anyone can accept this gift, no matter what she's done, and she will be saved. Jesus died for the whole world, but only those who accept His gift will be found in Heaven. It is not what we've done; it is not the prayer we say; it is the blood of Christ applied to our accounts. Please, have His blood applied to you today!

whatsoever things// JUST

Philippians 4:8—“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

In my Scofield study Bible, the cross reference for the word just is Deuteronomy 16:20, which says, “That which is altogether just shalt thou follow.” According to Dictionary.com, three words that relate to just are truth, reason, and fairness. If we are to follow that which is just, we must follow that which is honest, reasonable, and fair. We are not called to be blind followers of anyone or anything, even God Himself. We must consider whether something is true, fair, and sensible. The Bible says in Psalm 91:12 that the angels will bear us up, but does that mean we can go jump off a cliff and not be harmed? Of course not. But the Bible is true! Yes, the angels will bear us up, but it is not sensible to jump off a cliff, so, if you do, you will reap the consequences. What we follow must be altogether just; it must agree with every aspect of the word just. So, my thought for today is use reason to find out the truth, being fair to all parties, and follow that which is just.

whatsoever things// HONEST

Philippians 4:8—“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, … think on these things.”

Being honest means that someone is not a liar, right? In the Bible, honesty is almost always describing a person's walk, or way of life. According to Romans 13:13, we are commanded to walk honestly. Christians are supposed to live honestly, but what exactly does that mean? I looked up the dictionary definition of honest and discovered that living honestly simply means to consistently live honorably. We as Christians are to live our lives in such a way that the world cannot accuse us of wrongdoing. We do this by allowing the Holy Spirit to shine through us so that we, our personalities, are completely hidden behind the image of Christ. This is much easier said than done, but if we consistently read our Bibles every day, and pray, and then apply what we learned from that to our daily lives, shoving ourselves out of the way so the Holy Ghost can work will get much easier as time goes by.

Now, that defines the word honesty, but it does not explain what makes things honest. What are the honest things we as Christians are to think about? Does the word honest mean we can only think about those things that are actually true? Or does it mean we can only think about those things that don't perpetuate lies? (Wouldn't this cut out much of the media today?) I believe this is simply saying Christians need to think on honorable things. Disney movies aren't exactly honest in the sense that they did not happen in reality, but they are honorable, for the most part, because almost all of them portray some kind of good conquering evil. This is simply an example to get the brain juices flowing. If you believe that Disney is wrong, please don't get upset with me or think I am trying to convince you they are right. Every single person has the right to believe what she chooses the Bible says. No one, except your parents, has the right to force you against your will. This verse is simply saying that Christians need to think on those things that are honorable, that strengthen biblical principles and our faith.
